PDF Version

For several years now probiotic supplements have always ranked near the top or at the top of our best selling products list.  However, despite the popularity of the products we have been selling, a very significant amount of you had a major concern about the products that had an absolute requirement from the manufacturer for cool storage temperatures that necessitated shipments in insulated bags with cold-packs along with refrigeration by the end user.  Not only did you and your patients find this requirement cumbersome and inconvenient but highly impractical and of questionable effectiveness.  Why?  Two reasons:

1. Shipping technology that guarantees the product will be received cold by the purchaser no matter what the temperature or duration of shipping time is prohibitively expensive.  In turn, we have been using the best, cost-effective packaging technology available which, at best, depending on the time of year, will keep the bottles cold-to-the-touch for about 12 hours.  While the manufacturer has provided data that the products will meet label claim (The amount of active colony forming units [CFUs] per capsule that is listed on the label) even though the products are not cold-to-the-touch when received, many of you were still dissatisfied that a product recommended by the manufacturer to always be stored cold was not cold-to-the-touch when received.

2. The fact that the product was contained in glass bottles created a problematic, real-life concern due to the reality of how end-users typically store a product that requires refrigeration - Storage generally occurs in a refrigerator that is being opened and closed repeatedly throughout the day.  The repeated opening and closing, particularly during hot and humid days, causes "sweating" or moisture build-up on the bottle which can compromise viability of the product during the time the bottle has been opened and the product is being used.

Another significant issue also had to do with the use of a glass bottle: breakage.

Of course, as you have also made clear, the above mentioned concerns in no way negate all that is good about the probiotic product that so many of you have been purchasing from us.  These important positive attributes are the following:

  1. All of the bacterial strains were produced using technology that assures that a very high percentage of the bacteria will survive passage through the acidic stomach environment.
  2. It is a multi-strain product - Numerous studies have demonstrated the clinical efficacy of multi-strain probiotic products.
  3. The product is a true "synbiotic" - A "synbiotic" probiotic product is one that combines a prebiotic such as inulin with the probiotic organisms.  Shortly I will point out research that demonstrates the value of this approach to probiotic supplementation.

With all the above feedback in mind, we found ourselves in a bit of a quandary concerning one of our most popular products - There was an awful lot about the product you did like and there was an awful lot that you, and your patients did not like.

We decided that the only way that we could resolve the situation was to produce our own product in the Moss Nutrition Select Line that at least incorporated, if not improved, all the positive attributes and eliminated all the of the negative attributes.  We are excited to tell you that, after two years of research and development, this product, Probiotic Select, is available to you for purchase.

What follows is a detailed explanation of how we dealt with all of the negative attributes and incorporated or improved upon the positive attributes.

NEGATIVE ATTRIBUTES

1. The need for refrigeration - NOT NEEDED FOR PROBIOTIC SELECT!!

Probiotic Selectrequires no refrigeration for two reasons:

The bottle - The company that produces Probiotic Selectpackages the product in a unique container employing what is known as Activ-Polymer® Technology.  Why is this to your advantage?  The issue with the need for refrigeration, in reality, is not so much a need to protect the product from heat as it is the need to protect it from humidity, which, most often in most parts of the country, closely accompanies heat. Activ-Polymer® Technology, as you will see from the enclosed information, refers to a unique, three-layer container where a specialized desiccant layer lies between an inner and outer layer of plastic.  According to the manufacturer, this allows tight control of humidity levels in the bottle.  It also provides excellent protection against odors, volatile compounds, and anti-microbial agents.

"Overages" - "Overages" refers to the common practice used in the supplement industry where more of the active ingredients than indicated on the label are placed in the capsule so that, even with natural degradation of the product over time, the capsule will still contain as much or more of the active ingredients than what is listed on the label.  This is particularly important with probiotic supplements because, over time, no matter what protective technology is used, heat and humidity will eventually take their toll.

Probiotic Select, at the time of manufacture, even though the label lists that each capsule contains 25+ billion CFUs per capsule, it actually contains a staggering 62 billion CFUs per capsule!!

To demonstrate how the use of the Activ-Polymer® Technology bottle plus "Overages" assures that Probiotic Selectwill meet or exceed label claim of 25+ billion CFUs per capsule even under fairly extreme conditions of temperature, humidity, and time, the manufacturer of Probiotic Select, sent us test data on a similar product they had produced:

  • Label claim: 50 billion CFUs per capsule
  • Actual CFU count per capsule after being stored at 30O Celsius (86OF), 75% relative humidity for 6 months:  67 billion CFU per capsule!!

2. BREAKAGE? - NOT AN ISSUE BECAUSE OF THE USE OF THE ACTIV-POLYMER® TECHNOLOGY PLASTIC BOTTLE

3. RETAIL AVAILABILITY - NOT AN ISSUE BECAUSE OF OUR UNIQUE TRUE-MARKET PROTECTION SYSTEM.

POSITIVE ATTRIBUTES

Of course, even with all the above solutions to the negative attributes in mind, we realized that we must also meet or exceed the positive attributes with Probiotic Select.

1. PROTECTION FROM THE ACID ENVIRONMENT OF THE STOMACH

To protect the probiotic strains used in Probiotic Select, a unique capsule, DRcaps® are used.  According to the manufacturer, the benefit of the DRcaps® capsule is the following:

  • It protects acid sensitive ingredients from the low pH environment of the stomach without the cost and complexity of adding acid-resistant properties during manufacturing.
  • It is a vegetarian capsule.
  • It is a Kosher-certified capsule.

2. IT IS A MULTI-STRAIN PRODUCT

Probiotic Selectis a 12 strain product.  The technical bulletin enclosed lists all of the strains along with some positive attributes of each.  Below you will find a review of additional research that discusses the benefits of just some of the organisms found in Probiotic Select.

Lactobacillus paracasei Lpc-37 - In "The effect of probiotics on faecal microbiota and genotoxic activity of faecal water in patients with atopic dermatitis: a randomized, placebo-controlled study" by Roessler et al (Roessler A et al, Clin Nutr, Vol. 31, No. 1, pp. 22-9, February 2012) the authors found that Lactobacillus paracasei Lpc-37 reduced the genotoxic potential of faecal water in atopic dermatitis patients.

Bifidobacterium lactis Bl-04 - In "Probiotic supplementation for respiratory and gastrointestinal illness symptoms in healthy and physically active individuals" by West et al (West NP et al.  Clin Nutr, Vol. 33, No. 4, pp. 581-7, August 2014) the following was noted:

"The probiotic Bl-04 appears to be a useful nutritional supplement in reducing the risk of upper respiratory tract infections in healthy physically-active individuals."

In a fascinating study, "Effects of seven potential probiotic strains on specific immune responses in healthy adults: a double-blind, randomized, controlled trial" by Paineau et al (Paineau D et al.  FEMS Immunol Med Microbiol, Vol. 53, No. 1, pp. 107-13, June 2008), the impact of probiotic supplementation on immune responses from an oral cholera vaccine was assessed.  Of the seven strains, two, Bifidobacterium lactis Bl-04 and Lactobacillus acidophilus La-14, both of which are found in Probiotic Select, were effective:

"Between day 0 and day 21 IgG increased in two probiotic groups, for example, Bifidobacterium lactis Bl-04 and Lactobacillus acidophilus La-14, compared with controls."

Lactobacillus salivarius Ls-33 - In "Selecting lactic acid bacteria for their safety and functionality by use of a mouse colitis model" by Daniel et al (Daniel C et al.  Appl Environ Microbiol, Vol. 72, No. 9, pp. 5799-805, September 2006) it was found that Lactobacillus salivarius Ls-33 had a significant preventive effect on colitis in mice.  With these results in mind, the authors concluded:

"We conclude that not all lactobacilli have similar effects on intestinal inflammation and that selected probiotics such as L. salivarius Ls-33 may be considered in the prevention or treatment of intestinal inflammation."

4.  IT IS A TRUE "SYNBIOTIC"

A major positive attribute that we wanted to continue with Probiotic Selectis making it into a true "synbiotic," where the probiotic organisms are combined with a prebiotic substance which, in the case of Probiotic Select is inulin.  The paper "Probiotics, prebiotics and synbiotics - a review" by Pandey et al (Pandey KR et al.  J Food Sci Technol, Vol. 52, No. 12, pp. 7577-7587, December 2015) provides more information on synbiotic products.  The first quote gives some history:

"When Gibson introduced the concept of prebiotics he speculated as to the additional benefits if prebiotics were combined with probiotics to form what he termed as Synbiotics.  A synbiotic product beneficially affects the host in improving the survival and implantation of live microbial dietary supplements in the gastrointestinal tract by selectively stimulating the growth and/or activating the metabolism of one or a limited number of health-promoting bacteria.  Because the 'synbiotics' alludes to synergism, this term should be reserved for products in which the prebiotic compound(s) selectively favor the probiotic organism(s)."

The next quote discusses the constituents of a synbiotic product and its specific health benefits:

"The probiotic strains used in synbiotic formulations include Lactobacilli, Bifidobacteria spp, S. boulardii, B. coagulans etc., while the major prebiotics used comprise of oligosaccharides like fructooligosaccharide (FOS), GOS and xyloseoligosaccharide (XOS), inulin, prebiotics from natural sources like chicory and yacon roots, etc.  The health benefits claimed by synbiotics consumption by humans include: 1) Increased levels of lactobacilli and bifidobacteria and balanced gut microbiota, 2) Improvement of liver function in cirrhotic patients, 3) Improvement of immunomodulating ability, 4) Prevention of bacterial translocation and reduced incidences of nosocomial infections in surgical patients, etc."

The next study I would like to feature discusses some potential systemic benefits of synbiotic supplements.  In "Effects of synbiotic food consumption on metabolic status of diabetic patients: A double-blind randomized cross-over controlled clinical trial" by Asemi et al (Asemi Z et al.  Clin Nutr, Vol. 33, pp. 198-203, 2014) the following was stated:

"Some studies have suggested that consumption of synbiotic foods might help with controlling the metabolic profile, inflammatory factors and biomarkers of oxidative stress."

In addition:

"Synbiotics influence production of short chain fatty acid (SCFA), carbon disulfide and methyl acetate, and can increase the lipolytic activity.  Their direct immunomodulatory effects as well as down-regulatory influence on genes involved in toll-like receptor (TLR) pathways might explain their favorable actions.  Due to their effects on caveolin-1, endothelial NOS and neuronal NOS down regulation, synbiotics might affect oxidative stress."

SOME FINAL THOUGHTS ON PROBIOTIC SELECT

There are many outstanding probiotic supplements on the market, not the least of which are products we used to sell.  Therefore, because we did not want to just equal what is already in the marketplace but excel, we spent, a fairly long period of time researching and developing Probiotic Select.  Interestingly, our research indicated one of the most glaring deficiencies in the probiotic marketplace was not the probiotic supplement per se but the practicalities of packaging and shipping these high quality but environmentally sensitive microorganisms.  Therefore, with the attitude that "the chain is only as strong as the weakest link" we knew we needed to do more than just come out with another high-grade, multi-strain probiotic.  We needed to do that and so much more so as to address both the science of probiotics and the logistical practicalities that are required to make sure that the high quality product that leaves our warehouse will continue to be high quality as it sits on your shelves and goes through the numerous changes in temperature and humidity that are the realities of today's shipping environment and patient patterns of use and storage.
And, your patients can only buy them from YOU.
